Meet Alan Dean, our 2010 Judge
Alan Dean
I am originally from the United Kingdom, where I was a Gloster breeder, champion exhibitor and International Judge. I have been breeding Glosters for over forty years and was very pleased to see the quality of birds in the U.S. when I immigrated in 2006. I am indebted to many people this side of the Atlantic Ocean for helping me to get started.
My original stock of birds in England came from Derek Moore with a sprinkling of Harry Marriott blood. I was very successful on the show bench in the mid 90s with this bloodline. Due to a couple of serious illnesses resulting in major surgery, I had to reduce my stock to two pairs in the late 90s. Of course having had good results in the mid 1990s, it was very difficult to regain my stock. However, when I left England my stock was returning to its former standard due to successful selective breeding. I left England and passed my stock on to two breeders, one of which has been very successful recently on the show bench.
I believe that the Gloster first and foremost have type before anything else. The Gloster is a type bird to be bred and exhibited to a set standard. Without type the Gloster has no place on the show bench regardless of any other qualities the bird may possess.
Most of the Glosters I have seen to date in the U.S. have not disappointed me. The type is excellent with a good combination of size and quality.
I have judged the National Exhibition in England and the IGBA show on two occasions. I have also judged in Europe, New York and the American National in Lansing. I am looking forward to meeting old and new friends in the hobby.
Good luck to you all, always remember there can only be one winner, and let’s hope it is you.
